Beetle Drive Evening

I don’t think I other members and guests had so much fun for a fiver until last night.

New and established members plus guest of the club gathered for our second social night this season to play a Beetle Drive. The dress code of something that sparkles and was enthusiastically taken up with jewels, tops and accessories.

The game consists of shaking dice to get a score that matches the parts of a beetle and so one draws until a beetle is completed and the game stops. Highest and lowest score from a table of four move in opposite directions so that every game brings new players together.

The ensuing mayhem is a rattle of dice cups, furiously being shaken, thrown and passed on, accompanied by whoops and cheers as speed is of the essence and beetle parts are drawn. The game consists of 8 rounds with the highest total score winning at the end so congratulations to Marion Strong.

Half time was enhanced with oven fresh pizzas and a selection of filled rolls with interesting description flags as you can see in the photos, a free raffle and just time to grab a drink from Rob who manned the bar.

The event was also as sustainable as possible with 95% of materials used being recycled.

A huge thanks to Jim as doorman, bouncer and photographer for the night. Rob and his bow tie behind the bar. Rita and Brenda were marvellous in helping me to cater and clear up.

Finally to Terry who devised, organised, explained and ran the night in his usual quiet and reserved manner!!!!

Congratulations to Keith Sexton.

Congratulations to Keith on making his debut for the bowls club at home against the touring team Witney Mills Bowls Club from Oxfordshire earlier today.

Keith said he found the game to be very friendly and most enjoyable against a very strong  competitive friendly Witney Team.

The opposition team members on Keith’s rink were most complimentary on the quality of his bowling.

Before he left the club after the game he added his name to more games coming up.

Although Keith’s rink and the club came second in the two-horse race, everyone left with a smile both on the outside and inside.

“Oh What a Night” The Quiz Night 19th July

In the words of the song ‘Oh What a Night’, we certainly had one on Friday July the 19th in the clubhouse.  Over sixty members attended dressed appropriately in colourful attire to add a sense of celebration to the first social event for some time in the clubhouse on a hot summer night.

The fear of intellectual challenge on quiz night was quickly dispelled as teams named with a ‘plant’ theme, wrestled with true or false statements, ingredients for recipes and a tough round of matching numbers, names and questions all in the great rush to gain terrible mystery prizes including an uncooked baked potato!!!!

Undeterred by challenge, teams were called up to a fantastic dinner of baked potato, chilli and loads of extras to enhance the dishes all under the supervision of Rita Dibble (Michelin star applied for) with Alfie and Brenda supporting whilst Trudi and Dave kept score, and Vince our resident Bouncer manned the door.

As usual Terry, Rob and Dennis looked after all behind the bar and quizzed terribly.

After dinner the fun really began as teams moved around the room having to guess shoe sizes, identify liquids by smell, colour charts and feely bags containing fruits and confectionery and if that wasn’t enough they had to taste crisps and identify the flavours.

There was a successful raffle with the first prize option of a bottle of Grants Whisky or a second hand 500-piece jigsaw was won by Bob N. we still have the jigsaw if anyone would like to buy it?

Come the end of the night you wouldn’t know anything had happened as the team cleaned up, put away and cleaned down.  As the competitors left, positive feedback was given, and everyone is looking forward to the next event.

Please keep an eye on the updated Social Noticeboard as the next event, ‘The Tiddly Winks Challenge Night’ will be ticket only with dreadful prizes but great food.

We think a Saturday night would be a good idea as TV is usually ‘rubbish’.

What do you think?  How about a Bingo Night, Beetle Drive or Games night?

Give your suggestions, requests or ideas to Mike Squire via email  squiresweep@gmail.com  phone or message 07504 253467

On behalf of the club we would like to Thank Mike who was our wonderful host for the evening and his great team. There was clearly a lot of thought, planning, preparations, organising and effort to produce such a fun filled night.
