On Sunday 23rd August, BOSBC held the final day of its in-house Triples Competition.

The competition began back in June, with the group-stage matches being played over 12 weeks, eventually giving us our four teams for Finals Day.

With some of the club’s top bowlers involved, anticipation was high. The stage was set, the sun came out, and the seating around the green gradually filled with spectators ready to enjoy an afternoon of bowls.

 

🥇 The Final

The two teams battling it out for the title were:

Odd Balls — Richard, Frank and Steve
vs
Two Men and a Stick — Lenny, Anthony and Mary

And what a game it was!

Neither team managed to establish a commanding lead as the ends ticked by, with the score swinging one way and then the other. Going into the 18th and final end, either team could still have taken the title.

However, it was Two Men and a Stick who held their nerve to emerge victorious, winning 22–15. 🏆👏

🥉 The Third-Place Play-Off

Meanwhile, the battle for third and fourth place saw:

The Bar Stewards — Terry, Jim and Rob
vs
The Three Amigos — Derek, Geoff and Keith

The Three Amigos made a strong start and opened up a healthy lead. But, as we all know, bowls is a marathon rather than a sprint, and the more experienced heads of The Bar Stewards gradually began to eat into the deficit.

It all came down to the final end, but The Three Amigos held on to claim third place with an 18–13 victory.

👏 Congratulations to everyone who took part. It was a brilliant day, with some excellent bowls, plenty of close competition and a great atmosphere around the green.

A big thank you to Keith for suggesting the competition in the first place and for organising and running it so smoothly over the past 12 weeks. A fantastic job! 👏👏👏

 

 

 

 

Rita & Alfie would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate Alfie’s 70th birthday at our local bowling club. 🥳🎉

It was such a special evening, with the bowls clubhouse almost full to capacity! We really appreciate everyone who came along and helped make it such a memorable occasion.

A very special thank you to all the friends and family who helped behind the scenes, before, during and even the next morning — some of you nursing a few headaches! 😂 — to make the evening so enjoyable for everyone. Your help, time and hard work meant so much to us. ❤️

A special thank you also goes to our three-bar staff, Terry, Rob and Jim, for their amazing hard work throughout the night. They never seemed to stop! 🍻👏 Your help and dedication were truly appreciated.

And thank you, Derek, for providing the music and helping to create such a great atmosphere.

One last thank you and that is to Burnham on Sea Bowling for providing the venue free of charge to two of its members.

It was lovely to arrive on Sunday morning to find Donna already tackling the tidying up and working so hard for several hours, with some help from Tanya. Thank you both, ladies, for all your hard work — it was very much appreciated. ❤️

         🏆 BURNHAM BOYS TRIUMPH AT STREET OPEN FOURS! 🏆

A huge congratulations to four of our club bowlers who travelled to Street Bowling Club on Sunday 9th August to take part in their annual Open Fours Tournament and came away triumphant! 🎉👏

Anthony, Martin, Richard and Frank Chick who produced a fantastic performance, winning all four of their games on what proved to be a very tricky Street green.

With 28 teams competing from across Somerset, Dorset, Bristol and even South Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿, the Burnham quartet showed great consistency, teamwork and determination to finish top of the pile.

And a big thank you to Street Outdoor Bowls Club for organising an excellent tournament, providing great hospitality and looking after everyone so well.

 

 

 

Successful CPR & AED Training Day

 

The club would like to thank Emilie for delivering two highly professional, informative and, at times, amusing CPR and AED training sessions on Sunday the 26th. Around 20% of our membership attended over the course of the day.

Members had the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience using three CPR training manikins and three different types of AED (Automated External Defibrillator) machines, helping to build confidence should they ever need to respond in a real emergency.

Emilie travelled from Bristol in her own time and at her own expense to provide this training free of charge. The club is extremely grateful for her generosity, expertise and enthusiasm in helping our members learn these potentially life-saving skills.

Ladies Fear Plate Knockout Cup

• Friday 7 August
• Away to either Taunton Deane or Minehead
• 6.00 pm start
• Four rinks
• Dress: Greys
• Travel contribution: £4.50 if played at Taunton Deane, or £5.50 if played at Minehead.

Today 2pm the Club hosts this county match. Why not come along to watch what promises to be a good one and enjoy the club’s bar and have a go at our raffle?

We have been offered the opportunity to receive instruction on how to perform CPR and how to use the AED (Automated External Defibrillator) machine that we have in the clubhouse.

The training will be provided free of charge by a Clinical Nurse Specialist who is also a Clinical Trainer.

 While there is no charge for the training, donations to the Air Ambulance would be greatly appreciated.

A Review of the Sixth Week’s Encounters by Geoffrey Green of The Times

The sixth week of the West Somerset Bowls League has now been concluded, and with it the competition enters a phase in which the leading sides begin to distinguish themselves with unmistakable clarity. The weather, though variable, proved sufficiently clement to permit the full programme of matches, and the standard of play observed across both divisions was, in the main, of a commendably high order.

Division One

At the summit of the first division, Burnham‑on‑Sea A continue their progress with a composure and authority befitting a side of established pedigree. Their latest success, a decisive victory over Wellington A by seventy-seven shots to forty, consolidates their position at the head of affairs. Their record — six victories from as many matches — speaks to a discipline and consistency that few can hope to rival.

Not far behind, Williton A maintain their pursuit with equal determination. Their triumph over Ilminster B, achieved with a margin that leaves little room for ambiguity, ensures that the contest for the championship remains a matter of interest. Though trailing Burnham by a narrow aggregate, they remain the only side capable of matching the leaders’ unblemished record.

less said about the B Team after Thursday evening’s performance the better, myself included!    However, congratulations to our C Team, who beat the B Team. They played very well and were worthy winners. Well done to everyone involved.
