Club Christmas Quiz 2024. Result – The Answers are Now on the Clubhouse Notice Board

Congratulations goes to our winner – Richard Thomas who collects £25 and a fantastic cup.

Rich has removed the TV from the wall and replaced it with his Immense Inaugural Christmas Quiz Trophy, so he could relive his victory on a regular basis. His wife was not pleased and expects him home from hospital early next week.

Thanks to everyone who bought the quiz paper.

Hope you all had fun sorting out the answers.

All of the quiz sheets returned were duly marked.

Those with all correct answers were put into a hat, and the winner drawn by Richard Luscombe.

New Years Eve Party

Sir Mike Squire

Guests to a club social should now know it will always be a night to remember and so guests were greeted with an ‘Italian Champagne’ or fresh orange juice at the door to be then seated in a loose semi-circle.

The bar was manned by Terry and Rob and a full buffet prepared by Rita and Brenda awaits to graze on over the night.  Whilst settling down the groups had a little word game to indulge with three possible answers. Do you know what ‘weesquashing’ means?

1. stamping on small people  2. drinking dilute urine   3. spearing eels at night

Thirty adults then engaged in ‘pass the parcel’ but with a twist as when an object was unwrapped it had to be worn. The winners were the one with the most things on and the finder of the crown.  The photos speak for themselves as do the smiles.

On to the Two Minute quiz of three rounds to win a mystery team prize.  Players have fourteen categories such as tool, city, fruit, etc to complete with a given initial letter.  The two minutes start and furious scribbling and debate ensues.  The scoring system is 0 for a wrong answer, 1 point if the same as another team and 2 points for a unique answer. If the initial letter is ‘D’ there may be several alternative answers e.g. for city we had Dublin, Dubrovnik, Dusseldorf, etc but if there is any doubt about an answer all the players vote for or against, much to the dismay of some players and the winning team whose prize was sardines and apples.

With an hour to go before midnight we played whiteboard Pictionary with the chance to choose from easy, medium or a hard category.  Unflinching confidence led most teams to chance the hard category with appalling results as seen from the pictures. Richard Luscombe’s volcano and Brenda’s Martian will become legendary.

Richard’s    Volcano. ???                      Rita’s       Squirrel???                    Brenda’s  Martian????

Don led the crowd in a standing circle to sing Auld Lang Syne to bring the night to an end,

These events do not happen without a huge team effort and so I have to thank the gang for rolling up the carpet, setting out the furnishings and of course putting it all away. A special thanks for Trudi for sourcing items for pass the parcel and organising the Christmas quiz.  Rita and Brenda worked together for hours to prepare, make and set out the buffet as well as all the washing up and cleaning down. Terry and Rob worked wonderfully to keep the drinks flowing and special thank you to Terry who helped me clear up the next day ready for the carpet to go down again.

It should be noted that 90% of the waste and packaging has been recycled from this event.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all of our members, friends and supporters.

The club wishes everyone a happy and healthy New Year, full of wonderful memories.

Not too many bad bowls or unlucky wicks, but to enjoy our wonderful game of bowls on what should be a better green than the last couple of years. When all the hard work during the winter will be completed before the opening of the green.

Every year is a gift, and 2025 is yours to unwrap. Wishing you joy and surprises ahead!”

Class of 24 Christmas Gathering.

Some of the members who joined the club this year held their festive Indoor evening.

Not only did they play indoor bowls, but they also played Jack-Pot,  On the Edge and Target bowls.

Mike was on bar duty like he has been most Fridays and was kept nice and busy.

Our Chairman Don Bridges came along with more mince pies and made a short speech, and gave all a glass of Baileys.

Indoor Competitions, Closing Date for Entries 30th November

Hi everyone.

Just a quick thank you to those who have already put themselves forward for the competitions this year. Please remember that if you want to play triples and pairs then you MUST create a team and add the team details to the other two sheets. There are some on the main tick sheet who have not yet done this, so please can you speak to your friends and create your teams as soon as possible. We need more teams for both triples and pairs, to allow those competitions to go ahead.

If you are having trouble making up a team, let me or Richard Luscombe know, and we will do what we can to help and those of you who are in Class of 24, send a shoutout into your WhatsApp chat to see if anyone else is in the same position as you.

The sheets are up on one of the noticeboards in the clubhouse, so check them out next time you are there and make sure you join in the fun.

Paul.

Indoor Secretary.

Results and Information On The Clubs Olympics 2024

The Olympics (…well sort of …) Friday 13th September

Friday the 13th may be deemed unlucky but not for the 36 members who attended The Burnham on Sea Bowls Club’s Olympics.  Teams of four competed against each other at ten events.  Members old and new got together, chose an obscure country name and took on the challenges.

Rita and sous chef Brenda put up a splendid buffet from 6.30 to fuel the athletes throughout the night, Jim Bass enthusiastically manned the door and took official photos, whilst Terry, Pete and team manned the bar. The sporty attire dress code was embraced by all.

The first event was in the pool and involved two members of each team sending off their swimmer and steering them to the finish line. No team members were soaked during the event, surprisingly. With the swimming completed we moved onto the game’s stadium.

Laughter, cheers and groans filled the air as events took place. The discus event involving plates and cotton reels tested team loyalty and skills. When do you stop, or do you try one more in the tower building? Archery proved challenging as some players fumbled arrows and the bow, but Robin Hood’s reputation is safe. The high jump saw a Small Lego Man being propelled upwards and sideways hitting the blinds, floor, windows and down the radiator but landing successfully for several athletes.  The tennis event proved so funny for some ladies we were glad it was placed close to the loos!

The equestrian challenge and golf putting range were obviously outside to give everyone a breath of fresh air.  Both events tested teams to the limit, but success was achieved.

Obviously all Olympic Games finish with the relays and so teams furiously raced to gain the maximum points and thus the medals.  Never has so much fun been had with four chairs, a balloon and a bucket.

The medal presentation by Don Bridges assisted by glamorous Brenda concluded the night. An amazing Olympic chocolate cake was raffled and is being returned to the club by Mike 3 for the Chesney Triples.

A huge thank you to all who took part, the nutritional suppliers especially and those who helped clear up.

Gold Medallist are Donna, Bill, Trudi, and Dave.

Silver Medallists are Rita, Janet, Keith and Roger

Bronze Medallists are. Jean and Julie.

Clubhouse & Changing Rooms Tidy Up

            *  * ADVANCE NOTICE  *  *

CLEAR OUT DAYS – 21/22 SEPTEMBER 2024

It has been brought to The Management Committee’s attention from several members, that our changing rooms and clubhouse has been looking untidy and cluttered for a long time with one thing or another.

So with this in mind the club has decided there will be a total clear out of the changing rooms & the clubhouse.

Please assist us by taking by all your belongings home from both the changing rooms & clubhouse, including bowls, bags & clothing, or put safely away in your locker by Monday Morning 23rd September.

This process should identify items that do not belong current members or former members.

Any items unclaimed will be stored elsewhere. A photograph of the items will be put in a folder and kept in the clubhouse for six months.

Any items still unclaimed (with no identifiable owners name) will be sold off for club funds, given to charity or otherwise disposed of as appropriate,

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CO-OPERATION IN ADVANCE
